Mars is one of thirty
six rabbits who came to us when Fife City Council decided not to have animal parks anymore, what would have happened to these
rabbits and the guinea pigs who came with them if we had not taken them in does not bear thinking about,
rabbits and guinea pigs are in demand for experimentation. Some of this huge intake we managed to re-home among members and
friends while the rest took up residence in Edinburrow, they came to us on the 24th of July 2002 and the subsequent neutering
and vaccination was a severe strain on our resources. It is thanks to our vets, The Dryfe Veterinary Group, who reduced the
cost of neutering and persuaded the makers of the myxi vaccine to donate half the vaccine needed that made the entire operation
possible.
Mars became a resident of Edinburrow Castle on its completion and lives happily there along with Twix, Echo,
Bournville, Fudge and Toffee. Prior to their taking up residence in the castle these rabbits lived in a loose box, it was
the first time they had been out of cages. When moved into the castle with its large grass area they all sat still to take
stock, then they moved, tentatively at first but progressively getting bolder and bolder until they were running and jumping
all over the place! It was great fun to watch and work ceased for an hour while we enjoyed the antics of these animals in
their new found freedom.
We do not know the ages of any of the rabbits or guinea pigs who came to us from Fife, we
are just happy knowing that we were able to give them a quality of life they had never experienced before.
